Common problems and what to check
Engine: VW/Audi EA888 (1.8–2.0 TSI/TFSI)
- oil consumption (piston rings) on second-generation engines
- timing chain stretch and tensioner on early engines
- plastic water pump and thermostat housing leaks
What to check when buying: oil consumption; chain noise on cold start; coolant traces near the water pump.
Tip: Check the chain and tensioner after 100k km; oil to VW 502/504 spec.
